Grown in the misty high altitude mountains and picked early in the mornings Yarra Valley Tea's black tea is mallow and smooth.
This premium tea is known to be one of the best black teas in the world. Despite popular misconception Orange Pekoe (pronounced pek-ho) refers to the grading of the tea and not the flavour. To be classified as Pekoe the tea must be composed of new flushes. A flush being a new bud plucked with the two youngest leaves. Leaves lower down the bush produce a lower quality. Women artisan tea pluckers to this day pluck the tea by hand. The tea is then fermented, rolled and dried. With its finely twisted leaves of uniform size and distinct aroma, this full-bodied tea is malty with red brown liquor.
For the trivialist, the orange part in pekoe has no bearing on flavour but probably dates back to the Dutch Royal family in the 1600’s who belonged to the House of Orange. Tea merchants at the time reserved the best black teas for Royalty.
